Castello ducale di Aglié
Aglié (TO)

The original centre of the Castle dates back to the Middle Ages, when the San Martino family established itself in the Canavese area: today only a few masonry remains testify to the existence of that first fortification. The first transformation took place in 1646, it seems, by Amedeo di Castellamonte, who created a symmetrical structure with two courtyards with gardens. After the Savoy bought the castle in 1763, took off a grandiose redevelopment project by architect Birago Borgaro, which involved the village itself, the gardens and the park. The general layout of the garden was curated by Michel Benard. During the Napoleonic domination, the castle was turned into a shelter for the poor and the park was divided up and sold to private individuals. Since 1823 he returned in real estates and two years later began the last speech on the apartments, entrusted by Carlo Felice and Maria Cristina to Michele Borda of Saluzzo; a few years later he renewed the park according to the romantic taste. Nowadays it is next to the Italian garden and the park with secular trees. Since 1939 it’s owned by the Italian State. Even if it became a museum, the original structures and furnishings of the three hundred rooms, the picture gallery and the collection of archaeological finds remain untouched.
