Le prime notizie relative a Castel Sant'Elmo (dal nome del Santo, Erasmo, a cui era dedicata la cappella) risalgono al 1275. Nel 1329 Roberto d'Angiò affida l'incarico del suo ampliamento allo scultore e architetto senese Tino di Camaino che trasforma l'edificio in un vero e proprio palatium per il re e per la corte. Durante il viceregno spagnolo il castello, dal 1537 viene trasformato in fortezza difensiva: a pianta stellare come lo vediamo oggi. Dal 1604 la fortezza è stata usata come carcere per prigionieri illustri, tra cui Tommaso Campanella. Dal 1860, finita l’epoca borbonica in cui era usato come carcere, Castel Sant’Elmo è stato adibito a carcere militare fino al 1952; successivamente passa al demanio militare ed oggi, dopo vari restauri, è sede della Biblioteca di storia dell’arte, del Museo del Novecento, di un auditorium. Negli altri edifici della Piazza d’Armi sono ospitati gli Uffici della Soprintendenza della città di Napoli e il Comando dei Carabinieri per la Tutela del Patrimonio.

The first information about Castel Sant’Elmo (from the name of the saint, Erasmo, which the chapel was dedicated to) dates back to 1275. In 1329 Robert of Anjou entrusted the extension of the castle to the sculptor and architect Tino Camaino from Siena, who transformed the building into a palatium for the king and the court. During the Spanish Viceroyalty from 1537 the castle became a defensive fortress: a star-shaped building as we can see today. From 1604 the fortress was used as prison for famous prisoners, like Tommaso Campanella. From 1860 until 1952, after the bourbon’s age, Castel Sant’Elmo was used as a military prison; then it came under the ownership of the military property and today, after some restoration, it is the location of the library of history of art, of the twenty-century museum and of an auditorium. In the other offices of the place-of-arms there are the offices of the authority of Naples and the Carabinieri Art Squad.
