Il palazzo reale di Ischia è una residenza eretta nel 1735 per volere del primo proprietario Francesco Buonocore, protomedico di corte dei Borbone, per offrire alla famiglia reale l’uso delle sorgenti termali presenti nella proprietà. Dopo la rivoluzione del 1799, le sorti del palazzo seguono le vicende alterne del Regno di Napoli che nel XIX secolo passò sotto il controllo francese e poi di nuovo sotto i Borbone, che la fecero restaurare e ingrandire da Vanvitelli, fino al 1860 che la usarono principalmente come base per cacciare e pescare nell'antico Lago del bagno. Ferdinando II diede nuova vita al Palazzo Reale chiamando il botanico di corte Gussone per realizzarne il giardino: fece ricoprire la distesa di lava lasciata dall'eruzione del cratere dell'Arso con una bellissima e rigogliosa pineta ed abbellita da false grotte. Con l’Unità di Italia si ebbe un nuovo saccheggio e abbandono del Palazzo Reale, fin quando venne trasformato in uno stabilimento termale militare, funzione che ha tutt’oggi (spesso viene aperto al pubblico); ciò che rimane dei giardini, invece, è usato come parco pubblico.

The royal palace of Ischia is a residence erected in 1735 on the will of the first owner Francesco Buonocore, doctor of the Borbone’s family court. He built the Villa to offers the use of thermal water to the royal family. After the revolution of 1799, the fate of the building follows the alternating history of the Kingdom of Naples wich in the nineteenth century came under French control, and then again under the Bourbons, who had it restored by Vanvitelli, and they use it mainly as headquarter for hunting and fishing on the ancient Lago del bagno. Ferdinand II give new life to the Villa calling the botanist John Gussone to realize the garden: he covered the lava expanse produced by the eruption of Arso with a beautiful and luxuriant pinewood, beautified by false caves. With the Unity of Italy there was a new looting and neglect of the Royal Palace, until it was transformed into a military spa, function that it has now (often open to the public); now the rest of the gardens is used as a public park.
