Castello di Solanto

Il Castello viene edificato nel XII secolo da Re Ruggero con lo scopo di difendere la vicina tonnara. Il Castello, insieme alla tonnara e al feudo, oltre che dimora per qualche tempo di Ferdinando IV di Borbone, fu proprietà di diverse importanti famiglie siciliane: Casasaggia, Spadafora, Agliata, Filangeri. Il Castello divenne famoso grazie alla Regina Bianca di Navarra che vi si rifugiò nel 1410 per scappare dalle insidie amorose di Bernardo Cabrera. Nel XVIII secolo il Castello era completamente in rovina nonostante gli fosse stato affiancato un corpo di residenza; si iniziò a restaurarlo solo intorno al 1870 quando divenne proprietà dei Principi Vanni di San Vincenzo.

The castle was built in the twelfth century by King Roger in order to defend the nearby tuna trap. The castle, together with the tuna and to the feud, as well as residence for some time of Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, was owned by several important Sicilian families: Casasaggia, Spadafora, Agliata, Filangeri. The Castle became famous thanks to the White Queen of Navarra who took refuge there in 1410 to escape the amorous wiles of Bernardo Cabrera. In the eighteenth century the castle was completely in ruins although he had been joined by a body of residence; they began to restore it only in the 1870s when it became property of the Vanni Principles of San Vincenzo.
